Summary

This wedge-style wheel chock is very lightweight. You may think that it won’t be effective in keeping your vehicle from rolling. But you’ll be surprised that it does its job very well. The material is thick but lightweight plastic. It is supported with reinforcements on its interior.

The grip that this wheel chock provides is due to its ribbed surface and rubber pads. The pads are positioned on its front and back. I like this feature because this ensures that the grip is enough to prevent the wheels from rolling.

The size of this wheel is chock is small. So I’m not confident that it can support large wheels, such as in trucks and large RVs. I’d recommend it for your sedan or regular RV. Wedge-style wheel chocks without reinforcements tend to break easily. Good thing this wheel chock has some internal support instead of being hollow.

One disadvantage of this wheel chock is its shallow angle, so it can easily be run over. This happened to me, and the whole thing cracked. I wasn’t able to notice it in my mirror because of its small size. So you should be careful when backing up on it. I also don’t recommend placing it in the middle of your wheel so that you can see it in your side mirror.

Also, be careful with its edges when taking it out from its box. The edges are very sharp and could cut you. I needed to use sandpaper to smoothen them.

Even so, I would still recommend this product because it is effective in keeping your wheels from slipping.

  • Pros
  • Lightweight
  • The material is sturdy plastic
  • Features rubber pads for additional grip
  • The interior is reinforced for improved durability
  • Cons
  • Small and may be difficult to see if placed at the middle of the wheel
  • Edges are sharp
  • Cannot be used for large wheels

Summary

This product is one of the wheel chocks that I fully recommend. The rubber in this material is durable and won’t get crushed easily. I love that this chock has some handles that you can use as rope holes. So you can just pull away from the chock in a breeze before driving. It saves from all the hassle, especially when you’re not very fit.

You will also notice that this product has grooves engraved in the material. This ensures that your wheels won’t slip. This is very important when the road is slippery, like when it’s raining or snowing. So I feel that my RV is safe when I use this wheel chock.

But one thing I don’t appreciate is the strong rubbery scent of this chock. This is typical of rubber chocks. I find it distracting when I load it in the passenger seat for quick access. But I find that airing it out for few days will do the trick.

This item is also heavy. You may see it as good or bad. For you, maybe the heavyweight will ensure that the chock stays in place and keeps your wheels from rolling. Or you may see it a hassle as you need to carry such a heavy object.

I would still recommend this product. It works well and is perfect if your vehicle has a lot of loads. It’s very durable because of the high-quality rubber material. Plus, the grooves are there for added security. You can definitely rely on this brand.

  • Pros
  • With grooves for added security
  • Heavyweight for added grip
  • Made of high-grade rubber material
  • Durable
  • Cons
  • A strong rubbery scent

Summary

I find that this wheel chock by Camco is more durable compared with most of the chocks I’ve used. I think the durability is due to the plastic it’s made of. It’s superior in grade, so you’re sure that it won’t break easily. It’s also lightweight, but it can hold down RV tires measuring 29 inches.

With this product, you can be assured that your RV is secure. It doesn’t get crushed easily, unlike the other ones I’ve tried. You should also check the gross vehicle weight requirement (GVWR) of your RV and the chock you’re planning to buy one. But some chocks get crushed even though the vehicle’s GVWR is below the maximum GVWR of the chock. So be sure to also consider that brand you’re buying.

Some other chocks also tend to melt at high temperatures. This is something to look out for, especially in the summer. I find this wheel chock by Camco to do the job well while remaining intact in any weather.

But the downside about this chock is the non-existent rope hole. Some people will find it difficult to remove the chock from the tire. So if you have hip problems, you may need to consider other brands. But anyway, they are light in weight, so they are easy to carry and store.

In summary, I would recommend this product because it is a reliable wheel chock. You will feel secure when you park your RV or need to change your tires.

  • Pros
  • Durable
  • Suitable for 29-inch tires
  • Suitable for heavy vehicles, like pickup trucks
  • Lightweight
  • Cons
  • Does not have a hole to tie a rope

Summary

This product is perfect if you need a tire-locking chock for your RV. This is a very handy tool when you camp inside your vehicle. It will definitely prevent the tires of your RV from suddenly shifting as you move inside.

This tire chock will also protect your wheel suspensions from damage. This is because of the stability that it provides.

I love the firm grip of this tire chock on my RV’s wheels. It effectively reduces rocking movement when you’re inside, especially if you placed it on both sides.

It comes with stabilizing pads, which ensures that the wheels don’t move or slip. These pads apply force on your wheels in opposite directions. So it effectively stabilizes the wheels.

I also suggest that if you decide to buy this brand of tire chock, you should buy it in pairs. This is so you can easily balance your vehicle. But in terms of price, it is more expensive compared with other brands. So if you’re just going to use it to prevent your tires from rolling, it may not be a worthy investment. But if you need a chock to also stabilize and protect your wheel suspension, then it is worth the price.

But bear in mind that this particular tire chock won’t fit on all types of tandem axles. This is especially true for those with very short tire spacing. This product is suitable for those spaced 3–9.5 inches.
Technically, you can still use it if your vehicle has 2.5 inches of spacing. But you will need a bit of space so you can properly install it between your vehicle’s tires. Also, this product comes with a wrench. So you wouldn’t need to buy one.

All in all, this tire chock by BAL is one of the best that you can buy in the market. But for your safety, keep in mind that you should use it with conventional wheel chocks when parking at high recline.

  • Pros
  • Protects your suspension from damage
  • Stabilizes RV to minimize rocking
  • Very strong grip
  • Made of thick and durable metal
  • Coated to prevent rusting
  • Comes with a wrench
  • Cons
  • Difficult and time-consuming to install
  • More expensive than regular chocks
  • Can’t be used for vehicles with short tire spacing

Summary

First I’d like to say that I am very impressed with the ribbed design on this product. It is one the best I’ve seen among the chocks I’ve reviewed. This is designed in a similar way as that in aircraft, which effectively stops the movement of the aircraft even with a running engine.

This product comes in pairs. The two chocks are connected by a thick nylon cord. This cord allows you to easily install and pull out the chocks. This is great for large vehicles, like trucks and double-axle RVs.

The material in this item is durable, so you won’t destroy it when you unintentionally run it over. The product remained its shape even when I accidentally ran it over with my heavily loaded RV.

It’s clear that this wheel chock is high-grade based on its high-grade rubber. And the best part is that it won’t emit that awful rubbery smell!

Among the chocks in this list, the wheel chock by Buyers Products is my favorite. Unlike other chocks, this chock is broad enough so that it can cover the entire length of the wheel. It measures 4 inches in length, 8 inches in width, and 3.5 inches in height. So you won’t have a problem seeing it in your side mirror.

However, I don’t think this chock will be suitable for vehicles with large wheels because of its short height. But this is perfect for sedan-type vehicles. This chock is suitable for tires up to 17 inches.
An added feature is the reflective tape on its surface. This allows you to immediately see it and not forget you placed it before you drive away. This chock is more pricy than the others. But I think the price you pay is worth it because of its high-grade material and the absence of rubbery smell.

  • Pros
  • No strong rubbery scent
  • Great for sedans and dual-axle RVs
  • Good ribbing design
  • Packaged in pairs
  • Cons
  • More expensive
  • Cannot be used for tires of 18 inches or more in size

Summary

This is a very good product if you own a vehicle with tandem wheels and need a high-quality chock. This product prevents your vehicle from moving by wedging in between your two wheels.
I am impressed with how Camco came up with the design of this product. You just need to place it between your wheels, grip the wedge at the lower part, and make allow it to physically touch the wheel by using the knobs.

You’ll notice that the chocks are ribbed. These will stick to your wheel’s grooves. So you can be sure that your wheels do not roll. I found it really effective in keeping the wheels from rolling or moving. It has also stabilized my motorhome.

But beware before you buy this product as I find it quite a hassle to install. It takes much effort to firmly position the wedges between the wheels. It took me 5 minutes and a lot of back, shoulder, and knee strain. I wouldn’t recommend it for people with back and knee problems. But at least you won’t be required to use a hammer to fix it in place.

This product comes in two sizes, which considers the different spacing between wheels. One is for the standard 3.5–5.5 inches of spacing. The smaller chock is for 1.5–3.5 inches of spacing. Be sure to get the correct size for your vehicle or else you would have just wasted your money.

I don’t think this product will work alone when your vehicle is steeply reclined. I would strongly recommend that you buy another chock in this situation. Otherwise, this product is good for use on level ground.

  • Pros
  • Very stable grip and hold
  • Made of durable material
  • Lightweight
  • Cheaper than some other brands
  • Cons
  • A little bit of a hassle to fix in place and remove
  • Not suitable for steeply reclined vehicles

Summary

If you plan to buy an X-chock, go for the ones made of metal. I’m impressed as to how this brand of X-chock can avoid tire shifts. The design and material of this product is truly fascinating. It will also avoid damaging your suspension because of the foundational stability it provides.

I also find this stabilizer to be versatile. It’s great that you can use it in vehicles with different tire spacing. This is because this item is retractable from a length of 1 1/3 inches to 12 inches.

So if you have many vehicles, you won’t need to buy X-chocks of different sizes for tire spacing. But what I don’t like is that it takes a lot of hassle to install this chock. I even needed to pick up a ratchet wrench so I can securely position the X-chock in place. This is quite a hassle for me.

But this chock is great if you have a trailer with its wheel skirt extended. That is because you can install this product upside down. And you’ll see that it will still work great.

But beware, as you shouldn’t use this item in place of the widely available wheel chocks. This is only a stabilizer. The surface of this chock won’t provide enough grip, unlike the traditional chocks. It has no ribbing or grooves. So you shouldn’t rely on this product to keep your wheels from moving or rolling.

  • Pros
  • Effectively stabilizes
  • Works well if you have a trailer with its wheel skirt extended
  • Made out of coated metal to avoid rust formation
  • Cons
  • It is difficult and time-consuming to install and remove
  • Cannot replace traditional chocks
  • Cannot prevent the movement or rolling of tires

Summary

Now you may not have heard a lot about this brand of the wheel chock. It’s one those chocks that people don’t give much credit to. But it works fine and is very affordable. It’s also small, so it won’t consume a lot of space on your RV.

The material of this wheel chock is rubber, even its handle. It’s durable because the rubber is thick and heavy.

Don’t underestimate this wheel chock because of its small size. I love it effectively grips the tires of my RV. It also has a very good grip on the floor. This is true especially when the ground is made of asphalt. It really prevented my wheels from slipping, even though my trailer was heavy. It may be half the size of your tires. You shouldn’t have a problem with it because it works very well.

Another good thing about this chock is that it’s not a hassle to install. You just have to lay it at the back of your tire and then reverse your vehicle. It will effectively stop your vehicle once the wheels hit it. You can definitely use this in areas with steep recline.

But what I don’t appreciate about this chock is the very strong rubbery scent that comes with it. You’ll come to notice this immediately when buy it. But this is expected because the material is full rubber. In my experience, I had a hard time washing off the scent from my hands.

The solution to this is exposing it to air for a few days so that the smell won’t be that strong. But you can’t really clear out the smell. You’d definitely know where you have stored it when looking for it. So I suggest that you wrap it in plastic when not in use so you won’t have to smell it.

Even with its awful smell, I would still recommend this wheel chock. It does its job really well because it’s made of solid rubber. It is less likely to fail than some other chocks with minimal support at the middle.

  • Pros
  • The material is solid
  • Made of high-quality, durable rubber
  • Very affordable
  • Small, so it doesn’t take up much space
  • Very good grip on concrete and asphalt
  • Cons
  • Strong rubbery smell

Summary

This wheel chock is the cheapest in this list. The material of this chock is made from very thick red-colored plastic. Its surface is ribbed to get a good grip. The middle of this chock is supported, so it’s stronger than those without reinforcement.

I appreciate that this wheel chock is very easy to remove. It comes with a cord made of nylon so you can just pull it out from the ground. It’s very effective in keeping your wheels from slipping, even on icy ground. So this will be handy in the winter. It also works great on slippery and smooth floors because of its ribbed surface.

This wheel chock is suitable for four-wheelers even though it may look too narrow. However, this chock is not very versatile. You can’t use it on the ground made of gravel. It won’t be effective in keeping your wheels from rolling. This is because the ribbed surface is only designed for smooth and slippery ground.

Also, this chock is not very durable. So if you accidentally drove over it, it would surely break. It is that fragile because the interior of this wheel chock is hollow, unlike solid wheel chocks. Once it’s broken, it’s easy to notice because of its red color.

Another thing I don’t like is that you need to pound it with a hammer to position it. Just backing up on the choke is not a good idea. It may just slide away because its traction on the ground will depend on how much weight you place on its incline.

  • Pros
  • Reinforced at the middle
  • Good for smooth and slippery surfaces
  • Very cheap
  • Suitable for use in the winter
  • Ribbed on the surface
  • Very easy to remove because of the nylon string
  • Cons
  • Not that durable
  • Needs to be hammered into position

Summary

The rubber wheel chock by ABN is a durable, heavy-duty chock. Its height and weight is perfect for keeping your motorhome from slipping. It’s effective even on highly reclined and slippery areas.
The material of this wheel chock is made of rubber. So it can effectively prevent any slippage. I find the material in this chock fascinating because it strongly sticks to pavement. You can use it on all weathers, even in the winter.

This chock is quite heavy, so you won’t have any problem with it being blown away by the wind during strong typhoons. Although it’s heavy, it’s hollow inside. But I think it’s designed this way for function. I suspect that the hollow design allows the wheels to be kept securely in place and add further hold on the ground.

I like that this chock is integrated with an eyebolt made of steel on its side. I used this to tie a string or cord so I could pull it out in a breeze. You can also just use your fingers to pull it out. But using a string would be more convenient.

But typical of a rubber chock, it has a strong rubbery odor. So like what I do with my rubber chocks, I would air it out for a few days. This would minimize the strong smell.

Because this chock has a good height, you can use it for large vehicles, like a motorhome or truck. Take note that the incline in this chock is steep. So I don’t think this will work well on vehicles with small tires, like sedans.

  • Pros
  • Good for use with RVs, trailers, and trucks because of its steep incline
  • Good height and weight
  • Great grip on rough or smooth surfaces
  • Can be used on all types of weather
  • Cons
  • Strong rubbery scent

What to Look for When Buying a Wheel Chock for your RV

There are many factors to look into when selecting the most suitable wheel chock for your RV. Price alone won’t be a good indicator of the quality of a chock. You should definitely consider price but also look into other matters, as discussed below.

The durability of the material

Given that chocks are tools to ensure safety, it is crucial to ensure that they will not easily break down. Flimsy chocks are definitely dangerous. So you should consider what material is used to construct the chock. Is the material durable enough to withstand rough conditions? Will it work in different weathers? Or will they easily crush when you roll them over?

In the case of conventional wheel chocks, I suggest that you find one made of high-grade, thick rubber or high-quality, thick, and durable plastic. For X-chocks, those made of steel and coated to prevent rusting are preferable.

Size of the chock

Before you buy a wheel chock, you should determine the size that you need. Remember that chocks are usually not standard in size. The sizes differ based on the size of your wheels and spacing between wheels. Buying one with the wrong size will be you should ensure that the height of the chock is not less than a quarter the size of your vehicle’s wheel. For some of the newer wheel chocks, small ones can be used to support large tires. Make sure to do some research before buying one.

If you own a tandem-wheel vehicle and choose an X-chock, be sure to check the length of tire spacing. Also check if the X-check can be securely fit inside. Wheel space lengths greatly vary in tandem wheels. You should make sure to buy locking wheel chocks that are perfectly suitable for the spacing of your vehicle’s tires.

Maximum GVWR

X-chocks can only handle a specific maximum GVWR. So you should make sure to choose an X-chock that can handle your vehicle’s load. Things can go wrong if the weight of your vehicle exceeds this value. This can break the wheel chock, which is dangerous for you, your vehicle, other people, and other properties.

Stabilization feature

This is one thing you should consider if you’re planning to buy an X-chock or a tire locker. You should choose one that can effectively reduce the rolling and rocking of your vehicle. This is important in order to protect your wheel suspension.

Convenience in use

I suggest that you get a chock that will be convenient to install for you and any of your family members or friends. I find many types of wheel chocks to be a hassle to position. Of course at first, you may find that X-chocks are complicated to install. But it will be easy once you get the hang of it.

Gripping power

Before you buy a wheel chock, be sure to first know how strong it can hold or grip the ground and your vehicle’s wheels. I prefer wheel chocks with ribbings on their surface. It is also preferable to get one that works on both rough and smooth surfaces.

Functionality

When choosing a wheel chock, the additional features that come with it are also things to consider. This is because these features may add to your convenience. Examples of which are the presence of handles or nylon cords so you can easily remove it, reflective tapes, or having its own wrench included.
In addition to how much you pay for a wheel chock, these factors are important things to consider when choosing the wheel chock that will best suit your needs.

RV Wheel Chock FAQ

rv wheel chockHow important are wheel chocks?

I would say that if you own an RV, then having a wheel chock handy is extremely necessary. This is to ensure safety and prevent property damage due to accidents. I know some people prefer to make their own wheel chocks. However, commercially available wheel chocks are designed to ensure your safety. So if you don’t have much experience in doing DIY constructions, then I suggest that you just buy a high-quality wheel chock. Using a substandard wheel chock will be very dangerous for you, for other people, your vehicle, and other properties.

How many wheel chocks should I buy for my RV?

The number of chocks you need will largely depend on the class or type of chock you will use.
X-chocks should be used in pairs in order to balance the vehicle. This type of chocks is used only on tandem wheels. If you use an X-chock, you may need to get a pair of regular wheel chocks to keep your wheels from slipping while you’re busy installing the X-chock.

For conventional wheel chocks, you should know that the number of chocks will depend on how heavy your trailer is and the weight the chock can support. You should get at least one pair of chocks for your back wheels. But if your vehicle is heavy or fully loaded, then you may need to buy four.

Can you make RV wheel chocks at home?

Some RV owners prefer to make their own RV wheel chocks. You can do this if you have the skills necessary to create a sturdy and effective wheel chock. You can save much of your money this way. Here are some techniques on how to make different types of wheel chocks.

Traditional Wheel Chocks

Traditional DIY wheel chocks are not hard to construct and are usually made of wood blocks. For this purpose, you preserve the wood by treating it with salt. You can also just buy wood blocks that are already pressure-treated. But you must ensure that you measure it accurately.

Depending on the size of the wheels of your vehicle, you should get the correct chock size. Preferably, the chock’s height should measure 25% of that of your wheels. You can adjust the thickness on
I would suggest that you stick rubber pads underneath the chock to add some stability and create friction. This is because wood does not provide much grip.

X-chocks

X-chocks are preferable over traditional wheel chocks for tandem-wheel vehicles. However, this is a much more complicated process and would require some prior experience.

First, prepare the following materials:

  • Caliper or ruler
  • Drill
  • Cutting tool
  • 4 galvanized nuts
  • 3 galvanized washers
  • 3 large galvanized flat washers
  • 1 salt- or pressure-treated wood measuring 4 inches x 4 inches. Measure the space between the tires. This will serve as the length of the wood.
  • 1 piece of 0.5–0.625 inches of threaded rod
  • 1 tube of Loctite or other similar adhesives
  • 1 chalk or other markers

Follow these steps to make the X-chock:

Making measurements

First, you should know which part of the tire you would want to position the top area of your upper block. Mark that part with your chalk. From the marking, measure 4 inches with the ruler and mark that point. You should then mark the point in the wheel that is horizontal to this second mark. You can use a level to assist you. You should then perform the same step for the other wheel with the use of a level. This ensures that the markings on both of the wheels are at the same level.

The next step is to determine the measurement of the space between the two marks on both the top and bottom of the wheels. Be sure to write them down so you won’t forget.

Preparing the wood

After you’ve determined the measurements you will need, draw the two measurements on the wood. You should ensure that the centers of the measurements are vertical in alignment. For example, if you determined the space between your wheels at the upper part to measure 10 inches, then the center should be 5 inches. So if the space between your wheels at the lower part measures 5 inches, then the center must be 2.5 inches.

With your chalk, you should then place a mark at the ends of both the upper and lower measurements. You should then connect the leftmost end point of the upper to the lower measurements by drawing a straight line. Do the same for the right part. This line will serve as your wood’s angle that you will be cutting.

Cutting the wood

So now that you’ve properly marked the wood, you can now cut it following the markings. You should then check the wood under your wheels to ensure that they fit well. If everything’s good, then create another one following the same steps. You can use sandpaper or other tools to file and smoothen your wood.

Drilling the wood

Find the corners on the upside surface, and mark the intersection by drawing 2 lines across each corner. On a stable surface, you should then drill a hole on the center. Follow the same procedure on the downside surface. To check if you did this step properly, check the 2 holes if they are on the center.

Cutting the rod

First, you should know how long the rod should be. You may need to ask for assistance from your friend to do this. Position the 2 blocks you’ve made at the top and bottom of your wheels. Then determine the length that runs from the upside surface of the upper block to the downside surface of the lower block. You should then add about 4 inches so you can adjust it later. Then cut this rod.

Assembly of the X-chock

Now that everything’s prepared, you can now assemble your DIY X-chock.

First, hold a nut and slather some adhesive on it. Place it at about 1–2 inches from one of the ends of your rod. When it’s positioned to exactly where it’s intended to be, you can further add adhesive to really make it stick.

Second, you should then insert a locking washer plus a flat washer to the other long end of your rod. At this point, the nut should already be stably positioned on the rod.
Third, hold a block and place the long part of the rod into the hole. You should ensure that the large surface of the block faces the washers and nut.

Fourth, you should then insert and screw down one piece of a flat washer, one piece of locking washer, and one piece of nut in this sequence. Make sure that they are tightly screwed. You can then add another nut for added security.

Finally, get your other block and insert it with the small surface first. You should then insert one piece of flat washer, one piece of locking washer, and one piece of nut on this sequence. Now you need not consider the height of how you position them in the rod because this is the top portion of the chock. This part must be adjustable.

Now that you’ve fully assembled your X-chock, you should test it on your tandem wheelsets. Before you tighten it, you should ensure that the lower part of your chock is securely positioned on the wheels. If everything is good, you can make another set of chocks so you own a pair to balance out your vehicle.

What is the proper way to install a wheel chock for my RV?

Using conventional wheel chocks is very easy. You just need to position them securely against the tires of your vehicle. However, some wheel chocks need some hammering down. Others can just be backed up with your vehicle until it stops.

X-chocks are a little bit complicated to install. But it’s still fairly simple. You just need to position it between your vehicle’s wheels and adjust it for secure fitting. It depends on what type of chock you’re using. You should refer to the manual before using it.

Conclusions

If you own an RV, you should give high importance on safety. You should not compromise it by not buying a wheel chock for your vehicle. A good chock is definitely a necessary accessory. It will be handy, especially on stormy weather and slippery slopes. This will prevent accidents, injuries, and damage to property from occurring.

So you should invest in high-quality wheel chocks. It will be worth your money. Among the products I’ve listed, my favorites are the 28005 Deluxe Tire Chock by BAL and the 70472 Wheel Chock by MaxxHaul. These two have proven to be efficient in stabilizing and keeping the wheels of my vehicles from rolling or slipping. I had a lot of experience in using them. So far, they haven’t failed me even once.
